Meta Updates AI-Generated Ad Disclosure Labels to Enhance Ad Transparency
Meta is updating disclosure labels for AI-generated content in Facebook and Instagram ads to align with recent changes to its ad disclosure list. The new labels will appear in the "About this ad" section, accessible via the three-dot menu at the top right of an ad. Meta will automatically add AI information labels to ads created using its generative AI features, such as background generation, image generation, or adding animations, as well as to ads where AI editing traces are detected through third-party tools like Photoshop and DALL-E. This move aims to increase transparency of AI content and help identify potentially misleading ads.

Meta has updated labels for AI-generated content in Facebook and Instagram ads to ensure these annotations align with the company's recent adjustments to its general ad disclosure list.

Now, Facebook and Instagram ads created using AI tools will include a disclosure element in the "About this ad" section. Users can access this section by clicking the three-dot menu on any promoted post.
Meta explained: "To increase transparency around AI-generated content, we will automatically add labels to ad content created or edited using Meta's partial generative AI tools, or third-party generative AI tools provided by other products (such as Photoshop, Dall-E, etc.)."
Meta says that when advertisers use features such as background generation, image generation, or adding animations to "create or significantly edit images or videos," AI information labels will be automatically applied. Additionally, Meta will add these labels when it detects that an ad was created or edited by third-party generative AI tools.
Meta added: "Meta uses industry-standard detection methods (such as C2PA) to identify whether ad content was created or edited by third-party generative AI tools. When we detect this metadata, we label the content accordingly. We will continue to work with experts, advertisers, policy stakeholders, and industry partners to improve our approach to labeling AI-generated content as community expectations and AI technology evolve."
This update comes just months after Meta announced it would change feed ad labels from "Sponsored" to "Ad."

This update should provide clearer identification for AI content and also help flag potentially misleading depictions in ads. Meta has previously set AI disclosure labels for organic content (non-ad content).
