Amika Marketing Strategy: Bringing a Premium Hair Care Brand Closer to Consumers
Amika launched its global marketing campaign, "On Your Wavelength," on April 3, featuring hairstylists as the centerpiece to highlight the brand's professional authority and emotional connection. CMO Nilofer Vahora stated that the campaign aims to reinforce the brand's community-oriented approach and make premium hair care more relatable. The campaign will run through May, spanning social media, creator collaborations, digital, and out-of-home channels.

Professional hair care brand Amika is returning to its roots with a global marketing campaign focused on the unspoken understanding between stylists and their clients. The campaign, called "On Your Wavelength," launched on April 3 and highlights Amika's core care products while emphasizing its professional authority as a "born-in-the-salon" brand. The campaign comes at a time of growth for the independent hair care brand, and according to Chief Marketing Officer Nilofer Vahora, it aims to further solidify Amika's long-standing community philosophy through a "side-by-side" approach to communication.
"Amika sits at a very unique intersection of professional authority and emotional connection," said Vahora, who joined Amika in December 2024. "We were founded nearly 20 years ago by outsiders to the industry who saw an opportunity to make professional hair care more accessible." According to a company blog post, "amika" means "friend" in Esperanto.
At the heart of the campaign is a 30-second commercial featuring Amika's lead professional educator, Rashuna Durham. In the spot, she listens to four different clients describe their hair care needs, with one eventually saying, "You know what I mean?" Durham responds, "I get you." Each client is recommended the appropriate care product based on their hair type, resulting in distinct, polished looks.
Choosing a stylist rather than a celebrity lineup as the focus was a deliberate move to emphasize that Amika's stylist community is the true authority, Vahora explained. Amika's stylists are also brand consumers, with two-thirds using the products on themselves.
"Stylists are our roots; they are the experts who validate our product performance and bring the brand to life in the salon every day," she said. "At the same time, today's consumers are also seeking expert-backed guidance, especially in a category as competitive as hair care."
The "On Your Wavelength" campaign will run through May, spanning social media, creator partnerships, digital, and out-of-home advertising. The campaign was developed and produced by creative agency Shadow, directed by Ezra Hurwitz, with still photography by McKenzie Thompson.
Making hair care more accessible
Amika was founded in 2007 in Brooklyn, New York, and is primarily held by private investment firm Bansk Group, which acquired a majority stake in the brand in 2022. The brand has recently shown strong performance: in December, Amika launched nationally at Ulta Beauty, having previously sold through Sephora and online channels. According to Circana data cited by Vahora, within the first month of launch, Amika became Ulta's second-largest premium hair care brand.
Alongside the Ulta launch, Amika increased its collaborations with micro and macro beauty creators to further promote its products. The brand leveraged its stylist creator community and well-known faces such as "Love Island" star Olandria Carthen to promote core care products. Content focused on educating other stylists and showcasing personal testimonials and a range of hair types to reinforce the brand's philosophy that "all hair is welcome."
"With that campaign and the partnership with Ulta Beauty, we jumped to number one in the hair care category in media value rankings for December and January," Vahora said. "This showed us there is an opportunity and demand for us in the market, and Amika can play a role that other hair care brands cannot, because we have an extremely loyal customer base and a community-driven approach."
"On Your Wavelength" employs a similar creator strategy. During the campaign, Amika is partnering with more than 25 creators from both stylist and general consumer communities—all long-time users of the brand—with related content rolling out in April and May. Each partner will highlight two to four of Amika's core care products, each priced around $30, using personal testimonials and before-and-after results.
Creator content will be amplified through a full-funnel paid media strategy spanning Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Google, with some content also integrated into Amika's website as shoppable user-generated content. The focus on community and affinity content may help Amika stand out in the crowded professional hair care category. According to forecasts from Future Market Insights, the category's market size is expected to grow from $24.5 billion in 2026 to $38.3 billion by 2036.
"Many brands focus on clinical data and science, and Amika has that too—we have credibility and clinically validated data—but our expression makes people feel like they are friends of the brand, and that closeness attracts consumers and keeps them loyal," Vahora said.
This strategy is already showing results. According to Circana data cited by Vahora, Amika is currently the number one care brand in the United States, with one of its care products selling every 60 seconds.
Amika's latest campaign comes as Vahora (formerly Chief Marketing Officer at Milk Makeup) approaches her one-and-a-half-year mark in the role. Since joining, the executive has further strengthened the brand's commitment to community and affinity, qualities she believes will continue to shine through in "On Your Wavelength" and future campaigns.
"This is not a one-off campaign but a platform we are building. That intuitive connection and personalized solutions will continue to appear at every touchpoint, whether it's new product launches, educational content, category expansion, or future brand storytelling," Vahora said. "This will be a significant part of how we operate as a brand."
