Deep Dive

Neutrogena is calling on consumers to "break the rules" of skincare, challenging the various insights circulating online in favor of embracing dermatologist-backed science. The strategy is similar to that of L'Oreal-owned CeraVe, which has built a $2 billion brand by combining physician education with cultural entertainment content, building a $2 billion brand. Neutrogena, founded in 1930, also has its own professional credentials in this space.

"Neutrogena has always led the way in consumer skincare developed by dermatologists," said Chris Riat, global head of Neutrogena, in a statement. "'Break the Rules' is how we apply 90 years of expertise where consumers need it most—helping them cut through the noise and advance their beauty routines from both an aesthetic and clinical efficacy standpoint."

The first "Break the Rules" campaign supports Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Regenerating Cream. According to the brand, retinol is one of the most searched skincare ingredients, averaging 60,000 monthly searches. It's also a hot topic on social media: according to Pulsar data cited by Neutrogena, U.S. consumers posted 17,000 times about the ingredient on TikTok and Instagram in the first five months of 2026. The campaign builds on a tension—consumers both desire the results retinol offers and worry about the irritation this acidic ingredient can sometimes cause.

A 30-second hero video opens with a montage of diverse models as a voiceover lists common skincare myths like "don't smile too wide" and "don't sleep on your side." A woman then laughs off the advice and says, "Don't age by the rules." A board-certified dermatologist adds, "Biohack your skincare routine." The ad's tone is similar to campaigns from Unilever-owned Dove in its long-running "Real Beauty" brand platform.

Publicis led all strategy, creative, design, commerce, influencer marketing, social, and media work for the launch, according to a brand spokesperson.

Beyond TV and digital placements, Neutrogena will extend "Break the Rules" through tactics that have become brand staples, including creator collaborations and experiential activations. The brand will help consumers recover and provide sunscreen at Lollapalooza, scheduled for July 30-August 2 in Chicago. Previously, Neutrogena has experimented with engaging consumers around cultural moments, such as campaigns around'90s nostalgiaandthe #steamybooktok trend.

Kenvue posted strong first-quarter results, with net sales up 4.5%, including an 8.4% increase in the Skin Health and Beauty segment, which houses Neutrogena, according to financial results. Kimberly-Clark's acquisition of Kenvue is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
