Shopper insights played a key role in the development of "Rico's Tacos." The series tells the story of a widowed father, his daughter, and a grandmother in camouflage who together try to launch a taco business. Along the journey, the narrative touches on themes of identity, resilience, and legacy.
"What makes this collaboration special is that the creative was developed from the start based on Albertsons Cos.' shopper insights, rather than applying data after the work was completed," said Lela Coffey, vice president of user growth acceleration at P&G, in the press release. "This creates a stronger connection between the story, the audience, and business outcomes."
A trailer showcases appearances from P&G brands Bounty, Head & Shoulders, and Vick's, as well as a "shop while you watch" feature in the Albertsons mobile app. Scenes in the series were filmed inside Albertsons stores and feature real employees, and shoppers will soon see clips of "Rico's Tacos" as they browse and shop.
Albertsons Media Collective's new content service invites brands to come to the network with creative concepts, optimize the creative using first-party data, and ultimately distribute through the grocer's media channels, including in-store.
Retail media networks are racing to expand their upper-funnel capabilities, including video, and marketer interest in brand entertainment is growing, with mobile-first micro-dramas being a major trend right now. Retail media data has traditionally been valued for its ability to optimize targeting and measure performance marketing, but Albertsons wants to test its boundaries in shaping brand narratives and audience appeal.
P&G and Albertsons brought in Minivela, a company that develops creator-driven micro-drama content primarily for Latino audiences. Minivela CEO Manny Ruiz serves as showrunner for "Rico's Tacos," which premieres on June 23 and will roll out in episodes of one to two minutes through August. The premiere will take place at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, a major event in the advertising world.
P&G's Native personal care brand earlier this year launched a 50-episode micro-drama series with a style more akin to traditional soap operas, but also tapping into the current craze for vertical short-form video. P&G's ties to soap operas date back to the genre's origins, which is where the "soap" in "soap opera" comes from. The marketer's brands such as Duz and Ivory sponsored some of the foundational shows in the space.
Albertsons Media Collective says "Rico's Tacos" is just the first step in its content ambitions, with plans to expand similar efforts into more series, formats, and brand partnerships in the coming months.
"Retail media is evolving from mere ad placements to work that drives brand love, commerce conversion, and performance measurement," said Brian Monahan, senior vice president of retail media at Albertsons Media Collective, in a statement. "By aggregating shopper insights to shape creative and evaluate performance, brands can gain clearer visibility into what resonates with customers and what drives results."
