AI Marketing Triggers Gen Z Backlash: Rival Technologies Research Shows Nearly Three-Quarters of Gen Z Have Penalized Brands for AI Marketing
A study conducted by Rival Technologies in July 2026 shows that 72% of Gen Z consumers have taken punitive actions against brands using AI marketing, and 74% have a negative reaction to it. The study also found that Canadian Gen Z consumers are more averse to AI marketing than their American counterparts, and this aversion increases with age.

Vancouver, Canada — When brands use AI to create marketing content, Gen Z consumers won't just scroll past it. According to a study released by Rival Technologiesnew research, 72% of Gen Z consumers have taken direct action to punish brands after encountering AI-generated marketing content—from unfollowing and unsubscribing to publicly complaining or even abandoning purchases.
The study, titled"The Gen Z AI Backlash: How Young Consumers Really Feel About AI in Marketing", serves as a wake-up call for advertisers, brand managers, and creatives who are adopting AI to produce content.
Key Data: Negative Reactions Dominate
74% of respondents said they have a negative reaction when they realize a brand's marketing content was made by AI, with half describing this reaction as "very negative." Only 8% of respondents had a positive reaction. These feelings are also directly reflected in behavior:
- 50% of respondents unfollowed the brand on social media;
- 49% complained to friends, family, or online communities;
- 48% unsubscribed from the brand's emails or text messages;
- 43% completely stopped purchasing the brand's products.
Significant Differences by Age and Region
The research also revealed several noteworthy trends:
- Negative sentiment intensifies with age.Among respondents aged 18 to 20, the rate of strongly negative reactions was 44%, rising to 54% among those aged 25 to 29.
- The focus of opposition is on people, not technology.Gen Z associates negative feelings with job loss and unpaid artists, rather than the visual quality of the AI-generated work itself.
- Differences exist between Gen Z in Canada and the U.S.84% of Canadian respondents had a negative reaction, compared to 65% in the U.S.; 48% of Canadian respondents had stopped buying a brand's products due to AI marketing, versus 38% in the U.S.
Implications for Brand Communication
The findings also raise questions about how brands communicate their use of AI. Some Gen Z respondents link AI-generated marketing to job loss, so brand messages that celebrate AI-driven efficiency while cutting human roles may reinforce consumers' existing concerns about how the technology is used.
Paula Catoira, Chief Marketing Officer at Rival Group, said: "Marketers are rapidly embracing AI, and Gen Z is paying attention to how brands use AI and what that usage says about corporate values. Their concerns go beyond content itself, extending to employment, creativity, and how people are treated. Attitudes toward AI can shift quickly, so brands must keep listening rather than assuming they already know where Gen Z stands."
Methodology and Background
Rival tracks changes in these attitudes through itsEmerging Consumer Index. This index is a continuous research program covering Gen Z and millennial consumers in the U.S. and Canada, updated every two weeks. Rival's insight communities also provide brands with a channel to continuously listen to specific audiences, capturing dynamic shifts in attitudes and behaviors.
This study was conducted in July 2026, using Rival's AI-accelerated, mobile-first, conversational research platform, with a sample of 901 Gen Z participants from the U.S. and Canada, all drawn from Rival's proprietary sample library.
