Deep Dive
Goldfish, a brand under The Campbell's Company, is squarely targeting parents with its marketing this back-to-school season, debuting the latest iteration of its nearly three-decade-old brand platform "The Snack That Smiles Back." The advertising emphasizes that Goldfish is made with real cheese, contains no artificial flavors or colors, and is baked rather than fried, pairing these selling points with iconic characters and brand assets to strike a balance between nostalgia and modern consumer demands.
Healthier snack optionshave outpaced the overall category, as consumers seek better-for-you choices without sacrificing convenience. Additionally, parents are looking for better options for their kids, but only38% of parents say they are satisfied with existing options。
The new ads range from six to thirty seconds in length. In the ten-second "Talk Show" spot, a Goldfish introduces a guest to the audience as "free of artificial colors or flavors," only to discover the guest has been eaten. In the thirty-second version, two children peer into a Goldfish bag where two characters are filming a production.
"The goal of this campaign is to show that Goldfish is a snack parents can feel good about giving their kids, and we're thrilled to do that through 'The Snack That Smiles Back.' The tagline is iconic and memorable, and it also inspired the entire creative concept," said Chris da Roza, associate creative director at Mischief @ No Fixed Address, in a press release.
Using nostalgia to appeal to parents is a common tactic in kids' food marketing. Last year, subscription-based kids' food companyLittle Spoon partnered with Mattel's children's character Barneyin an attempt to bridge the generational gap between millennials and their children. Welch's took a similar approach in October, featuring kids in ads for the first time since the 1990s。
The latest version of "The Snack That Smiles Back" is not the first time Mischief has targeted parents in creative for kids' brands. In 2023, the agency partnered with Kraft Heinz to design trendy packaging forCapri Sunthat resembled high-end headphones, marketing it as "wireless noise-canceling technology for kids."
The Campbell's Company reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 sales (for the period ending May 3, 2026) of $2.4 billion, down 4% year over year, according to the earnings report. Marketing and selling expenses totaled $214 million, down 1% year over year.
